Intake From an Engineering POV

There are several things to consider when purchasing your first intake. For example, how much air do i want going to my engine and how fast do i want it to get there.

There are 2 basic formulas of fluid mechanics that help you understand how air flow works.

Mass Flow Rate = Density * Volumetric Flow Rate (units = kg/s)

&

Volumetric Flow Rate = Velocity * Cross Sectional Area (units = m^3/s)


From the 2nd formula we can say that:


Cross Sectional Area = Volumetric Flow Rate/Velocity (m^2)


Therefore it can be said that as the area of the inlet pipe increases the velocity at which air reaches the engine will decrease since these two variables are inversely proportional to one another. An increase in area will also mean that more air will be reaching the engine but it will take longer to get there.

On the other hand, as the area of the inlet pipe decreases the velocity at which air reaches the engine will be faster but less air will arrive there.

From this analysis, it can be concluded that for acceleration purposes you would want a smaller inlet. But, for power purposes a larger inlet would be advisable.

A further study in this area will be conducted shortly. Results will be posted in the semester break.
